<description>I am interested in your suggestion that SIM vendors might use this platform to build their own devices. Do you still think that this is a viable strategy?
What role do SIM card applications play in the current value network in your opinion?
I am researching this for my MBA thesis at Cass Business school and I don&#039;t work for any SIM vendor or operator.

<description>Nice piece -- very thoughtful. One question though: You say that Android is good for driving competition in &quot;softer&quot; elements of consumer proposition but will that be true if mobile operators have control over the serious applications (eg, payments) that have to be in the SIM for security reasons?
P.S. Why no OpenID login?

<description>How refreshing to come accross articles that offer a broader perpective on the mobile handset industry! Nice one!
While I completely agree with the fact that there is a general tendency towards HW and SW commoditization, I am not sure that it will go all the way.
The desktop PC market has been completely commoditized and it has become very difficult to make any money out of it. However, the laptop PC market still offers pockets of margins, as Apple and Sony currently prove. Why? Because laptop PCs (like mobile phones) are items that you take outside of your home and that you are SEEN with. Therefore, some people will look for specific designs, other will want to show their status through ownership of specific form factors, etc.
As long as there is some emotional connotation attached to mobile handsets, OEM still have a chance to avoid full-blown HW commoditization.

		<description>Nice and timely article.
Interestingly, just a few minutes ago I was on the phone with Tom Kosnik, who teaches at Stanford and is writing the sequel to Crossing the Chasm with Geoff Moore.
One of the questions we briefly discussed was whether Crossing the Chasm has adapted itself to consumer products and then I hit my browser button and there is your Tweet about this article!
